Summer Preventive Care: Health and Heatstroke Prevention in Florida

Summer in Florida reaches extreme temperatures during the month of August. Protecting your health and family from dehydration and heatstroke is a top medical priority.

What is Heatstroke? Heatstroke occurs when body temperature rapidly rises above 104°F (40°C) due to prolonged exposure or physical exertion in high temperatures.

Key Symptoms to Watch For: - High body temperature or hot, flushed skin - Dizziness, headache, or nausea - Rapid, racing pulse - Confusion or disorientation

Key Preventive Measures: 1. Stay hydrated by drinking water constantly throughout the day without waiting to feel thirsty. 2. Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). 3. Wear lightweight, loose clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen. 4. Take frequent breaks in shade or air-conditioned areas when engaging in outdoor activities.

At Piris Medical Center, we offer preventive check-ups and hydration/nutritional counseling for the whole family. If you experience signs of heat exhaustion, visit our medical team.
